Very Nice Experience Macon has some of the finest neighborhoods of antebellum to early 20c homes you'll find anywhere. The 1842 is a hilltop Greek Revival crown jewel overlooking the downtown area (5 minute drive from the busy commercial/restaurant area of downtown). It has close to 20 rooms in total, so is more like a boutique hotel than a traditional B & B. The front facade is stunning. Be aware that there are steps to get up to the entrance and stairs to climb if you're on the second floor, but the staff will help with luggage. Our 2nd-floor John Gresham Room was pretty large, and had nice chairs, a comfortable tall king bed, ceiling fan, and fireplace. The TV was pretty small, and a bit hard to see from the bed. Also, the bathroom was somewhat small (tub-shower combo). Interestingly, the room keys here are larger and heavier (too heavy) than we've ever seen anywhere, but I guess that's all part of the history. Although the room was not perfect, we've stayed at well over 100 traditional b & b's and historic hotels, and well understand that being able to immerse yourself in history is more important than perfection. They have an informal bar here (manned by the hostess), and it has a very good selection of fine bourbons, wines, and the prices are pretty reasonable. You can sit and drink in the lovely parlor area. As expected, the "famous" breakfast (included in room price) was, in fact, very good. You pre-order from several choices the night before, and it's served in the parlor. We had the Southern breakfast. Staff here is very friendly and helpful (bar service, luggage, restaurant reservations, etc.). You can park on-site or on the street right in front of the inn (which we did--no issues). This is obviously a pricey place, but not outrageously so, and well worth it for the history and overall experience.
